Many people call these mountains the Great Paekdu in Korean. They are also called the Šanggiyan Mountains in the Manchu language.

The mountains are home to many different types of nature. Most of the peaks are very tall. The highest peak is Paektu Mountain. This mountain has a large lake at its top. It is a volcanic crater lake called Heaven Lake. This lake sits at a very high elevation. The mountains also act as a starting point for water. They are the source of the Songhua, Tumen, and Yalu Rivers.

People have written about these mountains for a very long time. They were recorded in the old book called the Classic of Mountains and Seas. The name Changbai Shan was first used during the Liao dynasty. Later, the Jin dynasty also wrote about them in their history records. The mountains are a very special place for the Qing dynasty family. They believed the mountains were their traditional homeland. Legend says their ancestor was born near these mountains after a magpie dropped fruit near a lake.

The weather and plants change depending on how high you go. Winters are long and very cold in this region. It rains much more during the summer and fall. At the very top, you will find tundra. This is a cold area with very little plant life. Below that, mountain birch and larch trees grow. Further down, you can find spruce, fir, and pine trees. Lower down, the forests have maple, elm, and poplar trees.

Many different animals live among the trees and rocks. You might find Siberian tigers, bears, or wolves here. Wild boars and deer also live in the mountain forests. There are many birds like owls and woodpeckers in the area. One special bird is the scaly-sided merganser. Some parts of the forest are very old and have not been changed by people. On the North Korean side, however, many trees have been cut down. Today, people can also visit the Yabuli Ski Resort to enjoy the snow.
