The mountains look different depending on which side you stand. The eastern side is very steep. It drops down quickly toward the East Sea. The western side has much more gentle slopes. These slopes lead into big river basins. Many green forests cover these mountain slopes.

These mountains act like a giant water divider. They decide how water flows across the peninsula. This is called a watershed. Two very important rivers start in these mountains. The Han River flows through the city of Seoul. The Nakdong River is the longest river in South Korea. It flows through Daegu and Busan.

It sits on Mount Taebaeksan at 1,460 meters. The temple has a special place called Dragon Spring. This is the highest spring in Korea.
