Many famous mountain ranges meet at this special junction. These include the Himalayas, the Hindu Kush, the Karakoram, the Kunlun, and the Tian Shan. Much of the range lies within the Gorno-Badakhshan region of Tajikistan. The mountains also span the borders of China, Pakistan, and Kyrgyzstan. Because they are so high, people have often called them the "Roof of the World." This name likely comes from a translation of the Persian language.

In geology, the word "pamir" describes a specific kind of land. A pamir is a flat plateau or a U-shaped valley. These shapes form when a large glacier or ice field melts away. This leaves behind a wide, rocky plain. These plains stay until erosion cuts them into normal valleys. You can find these flat areas in the east and north of the Wakhan. People often use these high pastures for sheep during the summer. There are many different types of pamirs, such as the Great Pamir and the Little Pamir.

People have traveled through these mountains for a very long time. Around 138 BCE, Zhang Qian reached the Fergana Valley near the range. Later, Buddhist pilgrims traveled on both sides of the mountains to reach India from China. Many famous explorers also visited the area in more recent years. In 1838, Lieutenant John Wood reached the start of the Pamir River. Between 1871 and 1893, Russian expeditions mapped much of the land. These explorers helped people understand the difficult terrain of the high mountains.

There are many impressive peaks and glaciers in the Pamirs. The highest peak in the core is Ismoil Somoni Peak. It is 7,495 meters tall. In the Eastern Pamirs, the highest point is China's Kongur Tagh at 7,649 meters.

The mountains are also home to huge glaciers. The Vanch-Yakh Glacier is the longest glacier outside of the polar regions. About 10 percent of the Pamir area is covered by ice.

However, some glaciers in the south are melting very quickly.

Life in the Pamirs is shaped by the cold climate. The winters are long and bitterly cold. Summers are short and cool, which supports grasslands but very few trees.

Most people in the region earn money by herding sheep in the high meadows. Some people also work in coal mines in the west. A very important path for people is the Pamir Highway.

It is the second highest international road in the world. This road is the main way to bring supplies to the isolated mountain towns.
