Hindu Kush

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Hindu Kush is a massive mountain range in Central and South Asia.

It sits in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Tajikistan. The range forms part of a huge area called the Hindu Kush Himalayan Region. It acts like a great wall between different lands. To the north, it sits near the Pamir Mountains. To the east, it merges with the Karakoram Range. The mountains divide the Amu Darya valley from the Indus River valley.

These mountains are made of many different types of rock. They include rocks called schist, gneiss, marble, granite, and diorite. Long ago, the Indian subcontinent moved and hit the Eurasian Plate. This collision happened about 55 million years ago. This movement helped create the Himalayas and the Hindu Kush. The mountains are still growing today because they are geologically active. This activity means they can sometimes have earthquakes.

Many peaks in the range are covered in white snow. The highest point is Tirich Mir in Pakistan.

Other very high peaks include Noshaq and Istoro Nal. Many of the mountains are between 15,000 and 25,000 feet tall. The mountains get lower as they move toward the west. Near Kabul, the heights are around 10,000 feet. In the east, they reach much higher. The range is very wide from side to side.

Travelers have used the mountains for a very long time. There are many high paths called passes that people use to cross. One famous path is the Salang Pass in Afghanistan. It links the north and south of the country. There is even a tunnel built through the heart of the mountains. In the past, these paths helped traders move goods between different parts of Asia. The area was also a famous center for Buddhism. People even built ancient monasteries in these mountains.

The mountains play a big role in how the land works. Snow and ice melt to feed many important rivers. These include the Amu Darya, the Helmand River, and the Kabul River. These rivers provide water for people and plants. Most of the land is covered in green grasslands. Some areas are bare soil or bare rock. The weather can change from snowy winters to summer monsoons.
