geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Hindu Kush is a large mountain range in Asia.

It sits in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Tajikistan. The range acts like a wall. It separates the Amu Darya valley to the north from the Indus River valley to the south.

Many peaks in this range are very high. Most have white snow on top. The tallest peak is called Tirich Mir. It is in the Chitral District of Pakistan.

Other high peaks include Noshaq.

Snow and ice melt to feed big rivers. These rivers help people live and grow food. The mountains also have many high paths called passes. One famous path is the Salang Pass. It connects northern and southern Afghanistan.

People have traveled through these mountains for a long time. Ancient traders used the paths to move goods. The area was also a center for Buddhism. Many people lived in small villages in the valleys.
