It starts high in the mountains. It rises in the Sanglakh Range. This part of the Hindu Kush mountains is in Afghanistan. The river starts at a place called Sar Čašma. This spot is 14,000 feet above sea level.

The river flows through many places. It passes through the city of Kabul. It also flows through Jalalabad. The river moves into Pakistan. There, it passes through Peshawar. Finally, the Kabul River flows into the Indus River.

Most of the year, the river is just a small trickle. In the summer, the river grows much larger. This happens because snow melts in the mountains. Many other rivers flow into the Kabul. The Kunar River is its largest one.

People built dams to hold the water. The Surobi dam helps make power for Kabul. In Pakistan, there is the Warsak Dam. In recent years, the river has faced droughts. This means there is not enough rain or snow. Some waste from a plant has also entered the water. This can make people sick.
