It flows through northern Ladakh in India and into Pakistan. The river starts at the Rimo Glacier. This is a huge area of ice in the Karakoram mountains. Most of the river water comes from melting ice and snow.

Many smaller rivers join the Shyok. These are called tributaries. The Nubra and Hushe rivers are two main ones.

The river travels through rocky valleys and deep gorges. In some places, the valley is wide and flat. Here, people grow fruit like apples and walnuts.

The river can even freeze solid in the winter. This makes it a path for people to travel. Some think the name Shyok means "gravel spreader." This is because the river moves a lot of gravel during floods. Others think the name means "river of death" due to dangerous floods.
