The range goes from the Peshawar valley in the east to the Logar valley in the west. This distance is about 160 kilometers. The mountains also connect to the Hindu Kush mountain system. They act as a watershed between the Kabul and Kurram river systems.

Nature looks very different depending on where you stand. The lower hills are mostly barren and have no trees. However, the main mountains are home to thick forests. These forests have pine and deodar cedar trees.

High up on the summits, you can find cirque glaciers. These are large bodies of ice tucked into the mountain shapes. Some of these icy areas are filled with scree, which is loose rock. The rocks at the base are made of granite and gneiss. As you climb Mount Sikaram, the ground changes from soil to limestone. Higher still, you find layers of slate and crystalline rock.

History has often moved through these high passes. In 1893, a border called the Durand Line was made. This line cuts right through the Spīn Ghar mountains. Many people have used the famous Khyber Pass to travel.

This pass crosses a spur of the range. Another way through is the Peiwar Pass near Mount Sikaram. The Agam Pass is the best way to cross the main ridge. It sits at a height of 3,586 meters. During the year 2001, these mountains saw much fighting. Many fighters used the Tora Bora area to hide.

Life in the valleys is very busy and green. The Kabul River cuts a narrow path through the mountains. This water flows east to meet the Indus River. Farmers use this water to grow many things.

Near Jalalabad, people grow wheat, maize, and many vegetables. They also grow cotton, lemons, and olives. In the past, people gathered pistachio nuts and seeds here. The Bara high valley is a very important place for farming. Some valleys even have orchards with pomegranate trees.

Today, the mountains are a place of great interest. A large area in the southwest is important for birds. Scientists study this 20,000 hectare biotope to help living things.

The mountains are also near several large cities. Jalalabad is to the north and Gardez is to the west. Khost and Parachinar are located to the south. These cities help connect the mountains to the rest of the world. The Spīn Ghar remains a powerful part of the landscape.
