It is a gorge and a mountain pass. This area sits in Kabul Province in Afghanistan. The Kabul River flows right through the middle of it. This river flows toward the east side of the gorge. A main road also runs through this narrow space. This is called the Kabul–Jalalabad Road. It travels along the river. This path is very important for many people. It helps connect Afghanistan to Pakistan and Russia.

The gorge was made by nature over a long time. The cliffs are made of blue-grey limestone. This stone is very old. It formed about 250 million years ago. The gorge itself is much younger than the stone. It is only about 2 million years old. Water from the river carved the deep path. An underground river channel also collapsed to help. This mix of water and earth shaped the land. You can see the tall cliffs all around the water.

People have used this area for a very long time. Before the current road, people used the Lataband Pass. That pass is in the Karkacha hills. It also connects Kabul and Jalalabad to Pakistan. Workers began building the new road in the 1940s. They worked on it for many years. The road was finally finished in the 1960s. This new road made travel much easier for everyone. It replaced the older, harder paths through the hills.

Today, the pass is a very busy place. It is used a lot during recent conflicts in Afghanistan. Because so many people use it, the area has changed. There are many traffic accidents in the gorge. These things have caused heavy damage to the pass. The roads and the land around them are worn down. Sometimes, the pass must be closed off for a while. This makes travel difficult for those passing through.

Tang-e Gharu is a key link between different lands. It sits in a large mountain range called the Hindu Kush. This range is a famous part of the world. The gorge connects the city of Kabul to Jalalabad. From there, the path leads toward the border of Pakistan. It is a vital route for moving goods and people. The river, the road, and the mountains all meet here. It is a place where nature and travel come together.
