Arabian plate

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Arabian plate is a major part of Earth's outer shell. It is a tectonic plate located in the Northern and Eastern Hemispheres. This plate is one of three continental plates moving north. It moves toward the massive Eurasian plate. This movement is very important for our world. It shapes the land we live on today.

This plate works by moving and hitting other plates. It is currently colliding with the Eurasian plate. This collision mixes different pieces of the Earth together. It pushes up many tall mountain ranges. These mountains stretch from the Pyrenees to the Himalayas. They also form the Alborz and Zagros Mountains. This slow push changes the shape of the land.

Long ago, the plate was part of Africa. It stayed with Africa during the Phanerozoic Eon. Things began to change during the Eocene. The Red Sea rift started to open up then. The plate finally separated from Africa in the Oligocene. Since that time, it has moved toward Eurasia. This movement caused volcanic activity in the Red Sea.

Many different places sit on this plate. It includes countries like Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Jordan. It also holds Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, and Yemen. The plate reaches the Sinai Peninsula and the Levant. Some large cities are located here too. These include Riyadh, Baghdad, Amman, and Dubai. Other big cities are Jeddah, Doha, Aintab, and Halab.

Moving plates can cause big changes for people. The collision can lead to earthquakes or tsunamis. It can also cause volcanoes to form. Some volcanic fields are called the Older Harrats. These include Harrat Khaybar and Harrat Rahat. Some activity still happens near Medina. You can also find eruptions inside the Red Sea. These events show how much the Earth moves.
