The Zagros Mountains are a massive mountain range in West Asia.

They stretch across several different countries. The range covers parts of Iran, northern Iraq, and southeastern Turkey. It begins in northwestern Iran and follows the western border. The mountains continue southeast toward the Persian Gulf. They also cover the Armenian highlands and Iraqi Kurdistan. The range ends at the Strait of Hormuz.

These mountains formed through a very slow process. Two huge pieces of the Earth's crust collided. These are called the Arabian Plate and the Eurasian Plate. This collision happened millions of years ago. It also happened during the time of the second ice age. The plates are still pushing against each other today. Because of this, the mountains are getting taller. Scientists use GPS tools to measure this movement. The mountains are being squeezed and changed right now.

Most of the mountains are made of sedimentary rock. These rocks were laid down in layers over a long time. Much of the range is made of limestone. Limestone is a rock made from the remains of old sea life. Other rocks include dolomite and gypsum. Over time, wind and water caused erosion. This wore away softer rocks like mudstone. The harder rocks stayed behind to form long, straight ridges.

The Zagros region is very important for energy. The way the rocks formed helps trap petroleum underground. This makes the area a major place for oil production. Salt domes are also common in these mountains. These are big lumps of salt under the ground. Salt is very good at trapping oil beneath other layers.

In the southeast, there are even salt glaciers.

People have called these mountains home for a very long time. Early humans lived in caves like Shanidar and Bisitun. Scientists found Neanderthal fossils in these caves. Later, people began to farm in the foothills around 9000 BC. Some of the earliest wine production was found here too.

Today, many groups like the Kurds and Lurs live nearby. Some groups still move their herds with the seasons. They move to different slopes to find good grass for their animals.
