Taihang Mountains

geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Taihang Mountains are a large mountain range in China.

They run from the north down to the south. These mountains sit on the edge of the Loess Plateau. The range goes through three different areas. These areas are Shanxi, Henan, and Hebei provinces. They are a very important part of the land. The mountains help shape the world around them.

Many different peaks make up this long range.

Baishi Mountain is at the very north tip. Mount Xiaowutai is the main peak of the range. Mount Cangyan is the peak found in the east. The Hai River system flows through these mountains. You can also find brown forest soil here. There are also cinnamon soils in this area.

These mountains were formed a very long time ago. They were made during the Jurassic period.

This was a time long before people lived here. The mountains have seen many big events in history. Long ago, the Yellow Turban rebels fought in this area. They were defeated by an imperial army. Later, the rebellion started again two months after that. The fighting spread to the western border of Hebei.

History happened in these mountains many times.

During the Second Sino-Japanese War, the mountains were a site for battle. The Eighth Route Army held a successful ambush at Huangtuling. The mountains also help us understand names of places. The name Shanxi means "west of the mountains." This is because it sits west of the Taihang range. The name Shandong used to mean east of the Xiao Mountains. By the Tang dynasty, it meant east of the Taihang Mountains.

People use the mountains for travel today.

The Red Flag Canal sits on the south edge. A fast railway goes through the mountains too. This is the Shijiazhuang–Taiyuan high-speed railway. It goes under the mountains through the Taihang Tunnel. This is the third longest rail tunnel in China. The mountains are a huge part of the landscape. They connect many different provinces together.
