Central Mountain Range

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Central Mountain Range is a very important part of Taiwan. It is the main mountain range on the island. These mountains run from the north all the way to the south. They sit right in the middle of the land. The range acts like a big barrier between the coasts. It makes travel between the east and west sides hard.

Nature changes a lot as you climb these mountains. The range is part of the Taiwan subtropical evergreen forests. At the bottom, you find evergreen laurel forests. These forests have trees like Cryptocarya chinensis. You might also see subtropical pine trees there. As you go higher, the trees start to change. Broadleaf trees begin to take the place of the laurel trees.

History tells us about the names for these mountains. During the Qing Dynasty, people called them the Dashan. That name means "Big Mountains" in Chinese. Today, the name is a calque of the Chinese name. This means the English name follows the Chinese meaning. People also call it the Zhongyang or the Central Range.

There are many different peaks in this large area. Some people say the range includes the Xueshan Range. It also includes the Yushan Range. Yushan is the tallest peak in this big group. It is also known as Jade Mountain or Mount Morrison. Xueshan is the second tallest peak in the group. Xiuguluan Mountain is another high peak in the range.

High up in the mountains, the forest looks different again. At the very top, you find subalpine forests. These forests are full of conifers. You can find Taiwan hemlock growing there. Other trees include Taiwan spruce and Taiwan fir. These trees live at the highest elevations. It is a very special place for many living things.
