Central Mountain Range

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Central Mountain Range is on the island of Taiwan. These big mountains run from the north to the south. They sit between the east and west coasts. The mountains act like a wall. This makes it hard to travel across the island.

Many different trees grow here. The types of trees change as you go up. Low areas have green evergreen forests. As you climb higher, the trees change. You will see broadleaf trees. At the very top, the air is cold. These high spots have subalpine forests. You can find Taiwan spruce and Taiwan fir there.

The range has many peaks. Some people say it includes the Xueshan Range. It also includes the Yushan Range. Yushan is the tallest peak in this group. It is 3,952 meters high. The second tallest peak is Xueshan. It is 3,886 meters high. Another high peak is Xiuguluan Mountain. Long ago, people called these the Big Mountains.
