Taebaek Mountains

geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Taebaek Mountains are a massive mountain range on the Korean Peninsula. They form the primary ridge for both North and South Korea. This range stretches over 500 kilometers in length. It begins near Wonsan in North Korea. The range extends south toward the Yeongnam Alps. It eventually reaches the city of Busan. This range is one of the most important geographical features in the entire region.

The mountains function as the primary watershed for the peninsula. A watershed is a system of land that directs water flow. The Taebaek Mountains determine how water drains into different seas. The range creates a divide between the East Sea and the Yellow Sea. This process shapes the drainage patterns of the whole region. Because of this, the mountains influence where major rivers flow and where they end.

The topography of the range is notably asymmetric. This means the two sides of the mountains look very different. The eastern slopes are steep and drop quickly toward the East Sea. In contrast, the western slopes are much more gradual. These gentler western slopes form the basins for major rivers. This unique shape directs water toward the inland areas of the peninsula. Many of these mountain slopes are covered in extensive forests.

Several prominent peaks define the skyline of the Taebaek range. Mount Seoraksan is the highest at 1,708 meters. Mount Kumgangsan reaches an elevation of 1,638 meters. Mount Taebaeksan stands at 1,566.7 meters. Mount Odaesan is also significant at 1,563 meters. These peaks contribute to the average height of the range, which is about 1,000 meters. These mountains serve as the origin points for the peninsula's most vital rivers.

The Han River and the Nakdong River both begin in these mountains. The Han River is essential because it flows through the city of Seoul. The Nakdong River is the longest river in South Korea. It travels through cities like Daegu and Busan. These rivers are critical to the geography of the peninsula. The mountains act as the starting point for these massive water systems. Without this range, the river patterns would be entirely different.

Geologists study the mountains to understand how the land formed. A key area for study is Daegwanryeong. This peak is about 850 meters high and sits near the midpoint of the range. It is composed mainly of Jurassic granite. This granite is a single large igneous intrusion. Researchers use a method called apatite (U-Th)/He thermochronometry to study the rocks. This process helps determine when the mountains were uplifted.

Data from apatite samples shows a history of rapid exhumation. Exhumation is the process where rocks are brought to the surface. Samples between 25 and 500 meters showed ages of 21 to 26 million years. The weighted average for these samples is about 23 million years. This suggests a rapid event occurred around 23 million years ago. Samples from higher elevations showed older ages of 30 to 36 million years. This indicates an earlier, less intense cooling event occurred before the rapid uplift.

This geological activity likely relates to the opening of the East Sea. The rapid uplift at Daegwanryeong coincides with this period. This was part of a larger process involving tectonic movements. These movements were likely northwest-north (NNW) in direction. This process helped build the mountains and form nearby basins. Such tectonic uplift might have even affected other systems like Russia's Sikhote-Alin range.

The mountains are also important for industry and culture. People mine the range for iron, coal, tungsten, fluorite, and limestone. The range also holds historical sites like Manggyeongsa Temple. A monk named Jajang built this temple on Mount Taebaeksan. It sits at an altitude of 1,460 meters. The temple features the Dragon Spring, the highest spring in Korea. Additionally, the mountains hosted the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.
