The mountains are so significant that two Mongolian provinces bear their name. These are Arkhangai, which means North Khangai. The other is Ovorkhangai, meaning South Khangai. This range plays a vital role in the geography of the region. It influences the climate and provides water for many nearby areas.

The mountains create unique weather patterns across the landscape. Certain areas within the range possess mild microclimates. A microclimate is a small area where the weather differs from the surrounding region. In these specific spots, the winters are not as harsh as in other parts of Mongolia. The most notable mild area is found in the eastern Khangai. This is where the two provinces meet. This region is often called the cradle of Mongolian and nomadic civilization.

Water is a key feature of the Khangai mountain system. The range acts as a source for several important rivers. These include the Orkhon, Selenge, Ider, and Zavkhan rivers. The mountains also feed two specific lakes. These are the Orog and Böön Tsagaan lakes. To the west, the mountain terrain changes. It transitions into a different geographic feature called the Great Lakes Depression. This connection shows how the mountains link different parts of the land.

The landscape also contains volcanic features. On the northern slopes of the Khangai Mountains, there is a volcanic field. This field is named Taryatu-Chulutu. The volcanoes in this field are extinct, meaning they are no longer active.

Another example of volcanic activity is found at Khorgo. This is an extinct volcano located in the northern Khangai Mountains. These geological features show the powerful natural forces that shaped the region.

History is deeply tied to the plains at the foot of the eastern Khangai. This area is part of the Orkhon Valley World Heritage Site. Many ancient empires established their centers of power here. The Xiongnu people had a capital called Luut Khot, also known as Lungcheng. The Xianbei people located their capital, Ordo, in this area. The Rouran people also had a capital named Moomt. Later, the Uyghur Khaganate ruled this region from 745 to 840. They built their capital, Ordu-Baliq, in this same area.

Several peaks in the Khangai Mountains hold great importance. The tallest peak is Otgontenger, which means "Youngest sky." This mountain reaches a height of about 4,000 metres. It is considered a sacred place by the Mongols. State ceremonies are held at this mountain. Ancient Turks also regarded Otgontenger as sacred.

Another notable mountain is Suvraga Khairkhan. It stands 3,117 metres tall. This mountain is located to the east of Tsetserleg, the capital of Arkhangai Province.

The Khangai Mountains serve as a bridge between geology, history, and culture. The mountains provide the water that sustains life in the valleys. The volcanic history shaped the physical ground. The mild weather allowed nomadic civilizations to thrive for centuries.

From the sacred heights of Otgontenger to the ancient capitals of the Orkhon Valley, the range remains a central part of Mongolia. It is a place where the physical land and human history are closely connected.
