Sikhote-Alin

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Sikhote-Alin is a grand mountain range in Russia. It sits within the Primorsky and Khabarovsk Krais. These mountains are located northeast of the seaport of Vladivostok.

The range is a special place for nature. It is a temperate zone where different worlds meet. You can find northern taiga animals living near southern species. This mix makes the mountains a very unique home for life.

Many amazing animals live among these peaks and forests. You might see a powerful Amur tiger or a spotted Amur leopard. Asiatic black bears and Ussuri brown bears also roam here. Reindeer live in the northern parts of the range. Interestingly, there are very few wolves because tigers compete with them.

You might even find a Japanese yew tree. These trees are very old and can live for 1,000 years.

People have studied these mountains for a long time. The name might mean "coastal ridge" in Manchu. It might also mean "foresty mountains" in Nanai. In the 1910s and 1920s, Vladimir Arsenyev explored the area. He was a Russian geographer and a naturalist.

He wrote books about his adventures in the wild. One book, called Dersu Uzala, became a famous Oscar-winning film. Because of his work, wildlife refuges were created in 1935.

There are many important facts about this landscape. The highest peak is Tordoki Yani at 2,090 meters.

Ko Mountain is the second highest at 2,004 meters. Anik Mountain is the third highest peak. In 1947, a huge meteorite shower hit the range. It rained tons of metal over an area of 2,200 square kilometers. This event created large craters in the ground.

Today, the Sikhote-Alin is a protected World Heritage Site. UNESCO added it to the list in 2001. This helps protect endangered animals like the Amur tiger.

It also protects birds like the scaly-sided merganser. The site was expanded in 2018 to include Bikin National Park. This new area is called the Bikin River Valley. Protecting this land ensures that rare species can survive for a long time.
