It flows through China and Russia. The river starts in the Sikhote-Alin mountains. It flows north for a long way. It forms a border between the two lands. The river joins the Amur river near Khabarovsk.

Most of the water comes from rain. Some water comes from melting snow. Other water comes from springs under the ground. In the winter, the river freezes. The ice stays until April.

The river is home to many fish. You can find sturgeon in the water. There are also many kinds of salmon. Some salmon are called gorbusha. Others are called keta.

The river can have big floods. This can be a hard time for the area. In the past, people had fights near the river. One fight happened at Damansky Island. The Ussuri has many old names. In the Manchu language, it means soot-black river. It was also called the River of Foxes.
