It is shaped like the letter C. This area sits along the Yellow River. The river makes a big, rectangular bend here. This bend is called the Ordos Loop.

Hetao is surrounded by many landforms. The Helan Mountains are to the west. The Yin Mountains are to the north. To the east are the Lüliang Mountains. To the south is the Ordos Desert.

The region has two main parts. The West Loop is in Ningxia. It has the Yinchuan Plain. The East Loop is in Inner Mongolia. This part has two sections. One is the Back Loop. The other is the Front Loop.

Most land nearby is a dry desert or steppe. But Hetao is different. It has fertile grasslands. This makes it good for farms and animals. In the past, nomads used this land. They used it to move toward other lands. Hetao was also a key place for defense. It was very important during the Han and Tang ruling families.
