Between the 10th and 13th centuries, two groups lived there. They were the Cumans and the Kipchaks. These people were nomads. This means they moved from place to place.

Cumania was not a single empire. It was a group of many tribes. Each tribe had its own leader, called a khan. These leaders acted on their own. They were a strong force in the region. They even helped shape nearby lands like Bulgaria and Hungary.

Things changed in the 1200s. A group called the Mongols arrived. The Mongols were a powerful force. They defeated the Cumans in battle. This caused the Cuman way of life to end. Many Cumans fled to new places. Some went to Hungary. Others went to the Byzantine Empire. Even after they moved, their name lived on. Some areas in Hungary were still called Cumania for a long time.
