history Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Cumania was a name used for a vast area in the western Eurasian Steppe. This land was a very special place for nomadic people.

Travelers like Ibn Battuta described the area as a green and grassy wilderness. He noted that there were no trees or hills in this desert-like land. Because there were no trees, people had to travel using wagons. The name Cumania came from the Latin word for the Cuman-Kipchak confederation. This was a large group of tribes that lived there between the 10th and 13th centuries.

This group was not one single empire with one king. Instead, it was a confederacy of many different tribes.

These tribes were led by their own independent rulers called khans. The two main groups were the Cumans and the Kipchaks. Some people thought these were two different tribes, while others thought they were just different names for the same people. Even though they were not one single state, they were a very strong military force. They could influence the politics of many nearby lands like Bulgaria and Byzantium.

History shows that the Cumans were a powerful force in many regions.

Their territory stretched from modern Kazakhstan and Russia to parts of Ukraine and Romania. Different writers used different names for their lands. Islamic sources called it the "Steppe of the Kipchaks." Russian sources called it the "Polovtsian Steppe." In the Balkans, some people even used colors to describe parts of it. They called the western part "White Cumania" and the northern part "Black Cumania."

Everything changed in the middle of the 13th century due to the Mongol invasion.

In 1223, Mongol leaders Jebe and Subutai defeated the Cumans at the Battle of Kalka. A final blow came in 1241, which ended the Cuman confederacy as a political group. Many Cumans had to flee to find safety. Some went to the Byzantine Empire or the Kingdom of Hungary. Others became part of the Golden Horde under the Mongol conquerors. This was a very difficult time that changed the map of the world forever.

Even after the confederacy ended, the name Cumania stayed in many places.

In Hungary, settlers created regions called Kunság, which means Cumania. These areas were known as Greater Cumania and Little Cumania. The name also lived on through a church group called the Diocese of Cumania. This diocese existed in what is now Romania until the year 1523. Even King Béla IV of Hungary used the title "King of Cumania" in his official documents. The history of these people left a lasting mark on many different countries.
