It was a large area called the Pontic steppe. This region sat near the Black Sea. Many people call the people who lived there Scythians. They were nomadic people from the East. This means they did not stay in one place. Instead, they moved around with their animals. They were also known as equestrian people. This means they were experts at riding horses.

Life in Scythia changed with the weather.

Between the 9th and 5th centuries BC, the land was cool and dry. This weather helped a way of life called nomadic pastoralism grow. This is a way of living where people move with herds. Later, the climate became warmer and wetter. This change helped the grass grow very well. The thick grass let the Scythians keep many horses and cattle. This made their way of life much easier.

The land of Scythia had different parts.

The area stretched from the Don river in the east to the Danube river in the west. Some Scythians lived in the treeless steppe. Other people lived in the forest-steppe to the north. This northern area had rich, black earth. It was good for farming. Near the Dnipro river, the land was covered in forests. People lived in these forests and in the open fields.

Many different groups lived in this region over time.

Before the Scythians arrived, the Agathyrsi lived there. They were also nomadic people. The Scythians moved into the steppe and pushed the Agathyrsi west. The Agathyrsi moved toward the Carpathian region. Later, in the late 4th century BC, the Sarmatians arrived. They came from the east. The Sarmatians became the new leaders of the land. Because of them, the area was often called Sarmatia.

We know a lot about Scythia from old stories.

Greek and Latin speakers used the name Scythia for a long time. In the Hellenistic period, the name covered even more land. It included the southern Russian steppe. It even reached all the way to the Chinese marches. Scholars today use the name to talk about the people from the 7th century BC. They focus on the Scythians who ruled until the 3rd century BC. Their history helps us understand the ancient world.
