It sat near the Black Sea. The land was part of the Pontic steppe. This is a wide, flat area with little grass. Scythians lived there. They were a group of people who moved often. They traveled on horses.

Between the 9th and 5th centuries BC, the land was cool and dry. Later, the weather became warm and wet. This change helped the Scythians. More grass grew on the land. This let them keep large herds of cattle and horses.

Some Scythians lived in forests near the Dnipro river. Other people lived in the open fields. Before the Scythians arrived, a group called the Agathyrsi lived there. The Scythians moved into their home. This pushed the Agathyrsi to a new place.

Later, a new group called the Sarmatians moved in from the east. They took control of the land. After that, people began to call the area Sarmatia.
