Sarmatians

history Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The Sarmatians were a large group of people. They lived on the great grassy plains. These plains are called the steppes.

They lived from the 5th century BC to the 4th century AD.

Most Sarmatians were nomads. This means they moved from place to place. They were experts at riding horses. Their name might mean people who use arrows and darts.

They were also very good at making metal art. They made gold mirrors and pretty jewelry.

Around the 4th century BC, the Sarmatians began to move west. They grew very strong. They became the main power in the Pontic Steppe. This area is where Ukraine and Russia are today.

They even took control of the Scythian people.

Later, things began to change. The Goths and Huns moved into their lands. Many Sarmatians moved into the Roman Empire to live. Some groups joined other people and became new groups. One group, the Alans, led to the Ossetic people today.
