Thrace has a very long history. Long ago, many tribes lived there. The Greeks gave the region its name. They called the people who lived there Thracians. These tribes were often split into small groups. Some lived in the high mountains. These people were known for being warriors. Other tribes lived on the flat plains. They were more peaceable.

Many famous leaders once ruled this land. Philip II of Macedon and Alexander the Great both conquered it. Later, the Romans made Thrace a Roman province. Many large cities are in Thrace today. These include Istanbul and Plovdiv. The region is still a very important place.
