Scythians

history Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The Scythians were a group of people who lived a very busy life. They were nomadic people from Central Asia. This means they did not live in permanent houses. Instead, they moved across the vast grasslands called the steppes. They were famous for being great riders on horseback.

Being able to ride well was very important for them. It helped them move and defend themselves. They were a strong group that shaped the history of many lands.

Their journey began with a long move toward the west. Between the 9th and 8th centuries BC, they left Central Asia. They traveled across the Araxes river and into the Caspian Steppe. This path took them toward the Pontic Steppe. This area is found in modern-day Ukraine and southern Russia.

They moved because they were pushed by other tribes. This big move changed who lived in these wide lands.

As they moved, the Scythians became very powerful. In the 8th century BC, they took control of the western Eurasian Steppe. They displaced other groups like the Cimmerians and the Agathyrsi. By the 7th century BC, they crossed the high Caucasus Mountains. This led them into West Asia.

They even lived in parts of what is now Azerbaijan. They were skilled at fighting while riding their horses.

Scythian culture was full of beautiful and clever things. They were experts at working with gold and bronze. They often made art in a style called "Animal Style." This art showed animals like panthers or stags.

They also made special horse harnesses and weapons. These items are often found together by people who study history today.

Eventually, the time of the Scythians began to change. In the 6th century BC, the Medes pushed them out of West Asia. They went back to the Pontic Steppe for a while. Later, the Sarmatians conquered them in the 3rd or 2nd centuries BC. By the 3rd century AD, the Goths arrived and overwhelmed them.

Finally, the Scythians joined with other groups of people. They became part of the many new populations that moved into the steppe.
