Tomyris was a powerful queen of the Massagetae people. This group lived on the steppes during the 6th century BCE. She became the ruler after the king, her husband, died.

Her name likely comes from the Saka language. It might mean "of family" or "kinship." She is a famous figure because of her strength. Most of what we know comes from the Greek historian Herodotus. He wrote about her life and her great battles.

Conflict began when Cyrus the Great wanted her land. Cyrus was the founder of the Persian Achaemenid Empire. He asked to marry Tomyris to take her kingdom. The queen saw his true goal and rejected him.

Cyrus decided to attack the Massagetae instead. He tried to build a bridge over the Araxes river. Tomyris told him to stay in his own land. Cyrus used a trick with wine to fight her army. Many of her soldiers became drunk and were defeated.

This battle was very sad for the queen. Her son, Spargapises, was the commander of the army. He was captured by the Persian forces during the fight.

After he was freed, Spargapises died. Tomyris was very angry about the loss of her son. She sent a message to Cyrus about the wine. She promised to give him more blood than he could drink. Then, she led her own army into a final battle.

In this big fight, the Massagetae defeated the Persians. Herodotus says that Tomyris killed Cyrus in the battle.

Some other stories say something different about his death. A writer named Ctesias said Cyrus died against the Derbices. In that version, Cyrus was wounded in a battle. He spent three days organizing his empire before he died. Regardless of the version, the war changed the region forever.

People have remembered Tomyris for a very long time. During the Renaissance, many artists painted her story.

They often showed her winning against men. Even William Shakespeare mentioned her in his early plays. Today, she is a national hero in Kazakhstan. You can even see her face on Kazakhstani coins. Her name is also used for moths and butterflies.
