The name of this place comes from two historic regions. These two regions are Warmia and Masuria. Other lands like Mazovia and Bartia are also part of the province. Long ago, the land was home to Old Prussian clans. These included the Bartians, Pogesanians, and Warmians. Later, the Teutonic Order conquered the area during a crusade. They brought in German and Polish settlers. The Polish settlers from Masovia gave the region its name.

History in this land has seen many big changes. The Teutonic Order once ruled here as a strong state. Later, the region became part of the Kingdom of Poland. In 1525, the area became the Duchy of Prussia. This land later joined the German Empire. During World War I, the province was a battlefield. The Battle of Tannenberg took place here in 1914.
