Kaliningrad Oblast is a unique part of Russia located far to the west.

It sits on the Baltic Sea within a historical area known as Prussia. To the south, it shares a border with Poland. Lithuania sits to the north and the east of this region. The land is a semi-exclave, which means it is separated from the main part of Russia.

The history of this land involves many different groups of people. Long ago, the Old Prussians and other Western Balts lived here. In the 13th century, the Teutonic Order arrived and took control. They founded the city of Königsberg in 1255 on the site of a destroyed settlement.

Even though the rulers changed, the city remained a very important place for printing and education.

Large changes came during the 20th century through two world wars. During World War I, Russian troops fought in the region. They won a victory at the Battle of Gumbinnen.

This meant the land moved from being part of Germany to being part of the Soviet Union.

Today, the region looks very different than it did hundreds of years ago. After the war, many German people left the area. They were replaced by Soviet citizens, most of whom were Russians.
