It sits right on the coast of the Baltic Sea. The city is located near the mouth of the Neman River. This spot is special because the port stays free of ice. This means ships can move through the water all year.

It is the only major seaport in the whole country. It is also the busiest port in the Baltic states.

How did this place get its name? Some people think it comes from local words. They say it refers to the boggy ground there. Others believe it means "even ground" in the Curonian language.

This name might come from words for flat or open land. For a long time, people called it Memel. This name came from the Neman River. In some languages, the river name meant "silent" or "peaceful."

Klaipėda has a very long and busy history. It is the oldest city in modern Lithuania. Baltic tribes lived in this area as early as the 7th century.

During the 1700s, the city grew very wealthy. It became one of the strongest fortresses in Prussia.
