Klaipėda is a major city located on the Baltic Sea coast in Lithuania.

It serves as the capital of Klaipėda County and acts as the country's only major seaport. The city is also the busiest port within the Baltic states. Its location is strategically important because the port sits near the mouth of the Neman River. This position allows the waters to remain ice-free most of the year.

Because ships can move through the water year-round, the city became a vital hub for regional trade.

The name of the city has several possible origins and many historical versions. In Lithuanian sources, the name Klaipėda appears as early as the 15th century. One theory from Samogitian folk etymology suggests the name refers to boggy terrain. This idea comes from the words *klaidyti*, meaning to obstruct, and *pėda*, meaning foot. However, it is more likely of Curonian origin. It may combine *klais* or *klait*, meaning flat or open, with *peda*, meaning ground. This would describe the relatively flat terrain of the original settlement.

For much of its history, the city was known by the German name Memel.

The history of the city began long before its official founding. Baltic tribes lived in the region as early as the 7th century. These tribes used the area as a trading center for goods and annual fairs.

The formal history of the city began with the Teutonic Knights. In 1252, they founded a fort called Memelburg, or Memel Castle. The construction was completed in 1253. The castle was garrisoned by troops from the Teutonic Order. Over the centuries, the city changed hands many times. It belonged to the State of the Teutonic Order, the Duchy of Prussia, and the German Empire. It was also part of the Lithuanian Soviet Socialist Republic after World War II. It has remained part of Lithuania since 1944.

The city's development was often tied to its military importance. During the 13th and 14th centuries, the castle faced many sieges. Lithuanian armies led by Grand Duke Gediminas attacked the castle in 1323. Later, Lithuanian tribes sacked the castle in 1360 and again in 1379. To protect the town, builders worked to strengthen the fortifications. Between 1422 and 1441, they improved the castle defenses. Eventually, the ramparts reached a height of 7 meters.

By the early 18th century, Memel was known as one of the strongest fortresses in Prussia.

Klaipėda experienced significant economic growth during the 18th century. The city became a part of the Kingdom of Prussia in 1701. During this time, English traders became very active in the port. They were interested in the local wood manufacturing industry. The city established industrial sawmills to process timber. In 1784, 996 ships arrived in the port, and 500 of those were English.

Much of this timber was exported to Great Britain for use by the Royal Navy. In 1792 alone, 756 British ships visited the town to collect lumber. This trade provided the merchants of the city with great stability and wealth.

The city also played a role in major political shifts in Europe. During the Napoleonic Wars, Memel became the temporary capital of the Kingdom of Prussia. From 1807 to 1808, King Frederick William III lived in the town. While residing in Memel, the king signed the October Edict on 9 October 1807. This important document abolished serfdom in Prussia. This event was part of a larger series of reforms in the Prussian state. The city's status as a center of government showed its growing regional importance.

Today, Klaipėda is a growing urban center with a large population. As of 2025, the population of the city is 160,885 people. The urban zone has expanded into many surrounding suburbs. Most people living in these suburbs work within the city itself. The city is also a destination for tourism and culture. Visitors can enjoy the annual Klaipėda Sea Festival.
