It sits right on the coast of the Baltic Sea. This city is the largest in the Courland region. It is also the third-largest city in the whole country. Many people call it the "City where the wind is born."

This name comes from the constant sea breeze. A large wind farm with 33 turbines sits nearby to use that wind. Liepāja will be the European Capital of Culture in 2027.

The city has many names from its long history. The name Liepāja comes from the Latvian word "liepa," which means linden.

An older name, Libau, likely came from the Līva river. This river used to flow through the city, but it does not exist anymore. The Teutonic Order built a town called Libau in 1263.

The Latvian name was first written down in 1649. People in nearby Lithuania call it Liepoja. In Poland, it is known as Lipawa.

Liepāja has been a very busy place for trade and travel. In the 1400s, it was part of a trade path from Amsterdam to Moscow.

By the 1600s, the city was a main port for the Duchy of Courland. Ships traded with places like Britain, France, and Portugal. The city grew very fast during the 1800s. In 1857, a new plan helped rebuild the port.

They even built a lighthouse and breakwaters to help ships.

Being a port changed how people lived there. The city became a place where many people left their homes. About 500,000 people moved from the Russian Empire to the United States through Liepāja.

By 1906, 40,000 migrants used the ships every year. The city also became a place for learning. They opened a school for submarine navigation and a water aerodrome.

The population grew from 10,000 to over 100,000 in just 60 years.

Wars and changes have shaped the city's look. During World War I, German ships shelled the port.

Later, the city became part of the new Latvian state. You can still see beautiful buildings designed by Paul Max Bertschy.
