The name of the region means "Land of Curonians." It sits along the Baltic Sea to the west. To the north, the coast meets the Gulf of Riga. Lithuania is the neighbor to the south. The Daugava River forms its northeastern boundary. This river separates Courland from the regions of Latgale and Vidzeme.

The landscape is mostly low and rolling. Much of the coast is flat and marshy. In the middle of the land, you find wooded dunes. These woods are full of pine, spruce, birch, and oak trees. There are also many swamps and lakes here. The Jelgava plain divides the land into two distinct parts. The western side is fertile and has many people living there. The eastern side is less fertile and has fewer people.

Long ago, a Baltic tribe called the Curonians lived here. They were famous for being great sailors and warriors. They lived on these shores from before the 5th century. They resisted many invaders for a long time. In 1210, a fleet of eight Curonian ships fought near Gotland. Eventually, the Curonians were conquered by the Livonian Order in 1266. After this, the people slowly merged with other Baltic tribes. Their culture left a lasting legacy in the region.

Courland has been many different things over the years. From 1561 to 1795, it was a semi-independent duchy. It was even one of the smallest nations to have colonies far away. They had small outposts in the Caribbean and in Africa. Later, the territory became part of the Russian Empire. In 1870, the population was about 619,154 people. Most of the people living there were Latvians.

Many rivers flow through this land toward the sea. Nearly one hundred rivers drain the area. Only three of them are large enough for ships to travel on. These are the Daugava, the Lielupe, and the Venta rivers. The weather in Courland can be very changeable. It is often damp and foggy because of the lakes and marshes. The winters in this part of the world are often severe. This makes the land a very interesting place to study.
