It stretches along the coast of the Wadden Sea. This area covers parts of the Netherlands and northwestern Germany. Many people call the people living there Frisians. They belong to a West Germanic ethnic group. The name might come from an old word meaning "curly" or "crisp." This likely described the hair of the ancient tribes.

History tells us that Frisians have lived here for a very long time. People began settling in the area around the 6th century BC. In Roman times, some people lived on terps. These were hills made by humans to stay above the water.

During the Early Middle Ages, the Frisian presence grew very large. They moved from Flanders all the way to the Weser River. Some legends say they once had a great kingdom. This kingdom might have reached from the Scheldt River to the Weser River.

Frisian people were famous for being very skilled merchants. Between the 7th and 10th centuries, they sailed to many distant cities. They traveled to places like London, York, and Cologne.

This trade helped keep the region peaceful for a long time. In the 12th century, noblemen formed the Upstalsboom League. They used the slogan "Frisian freedom" to protect their rights. This league helped them stand against powerful rulers. However, the league eventually collapsed after the year 1337.

There are many interesting stories about famous Frisians. One famous man was Pier Gerlofs Donia. People called him Grutte Pier. He was a fighter who challenged authority in the 1500s.
