The name comes from the Livonians, who lived near the shores of what is now Latvia. Most of this land sits within the modern countries of Estonia and Latvia. To the north, it touched the Gulf of Finland. To the east, it sat near Lake Peipus and Russia. To the south, the land bordered Lithuania.

Many different groups of people lived in this region. In the north, Finnic tribes made their homes there. In the south, various Baltic tribes lived along the land.

Later, a new group became the ruling class. These people were the descendants of crusaders known as Baltic Germans. They helped shape the way the land was run for many years.

Religious leaders and knights changed the history of the area. Around 1200, Bishop Albert sailed to the region with armed crusaders. He wanted to create a new territory in the east. In 1202, he started a group called the Livonian Brothers of the Sword.

These men were known as warrior monks. They built strong castles in places like Fellin, Wenden, and Segewold. They also built a large cathedral in the city of Riga in 1215.

Things changed after a big battle in 1236. The Sword Brothers lost a fight against the Lithuanians and Semigallians at the Battle of Saule. Because of this, the survivors joined the Teutonic Order in 1237.

They became known as the Livonian Order. Later, in 1418, they joined the Livonian Confederation. This was a group of five states that worked together. The city of Walk was chosen as the place for their meetings.

War and new leaders eventually changed the borders again. The Livonian War lasted from 1558 to 1583. This conflict reduced the land to the southern part of Estonia and the northern part of Latvia. During this time, different kings from Sweden and Poland tried to gain control. The history of Livonia shows how many different powers wanted to rule this important coastal area.
