The Gulf of Bothnia is a long arm of the Baltic Sea.

It sits between the west coast of Finland and the east coast of Sweden. The gulf is divided into two main areas. The northern part is called the Bothnian Bay. The southern part is called the Bothnian Sea. A narrow region called the Kvarken sits between these two parts.

In the south, the islands of Åland sit between the sea and the Archipelago Sea.

The water in the gulf changes as you travel north. Many rivers flow into the gulf from both sides. This makes the water less salty in the north. In the Bothnian Bay, the salt level is very low. It is only 0.4% near the Kvarken and 0.2% in the far north. Because the water is almost fresh, many fish live there. Pike, whitefish, and perch all thrive in these waters.

Long ago, the gulf was not on many maps. A map from 1482 by Nicolaus Germanus showed the area. However, it did not even have a name yet. The name Bothnia comes from a Latin version of a Swedish word. This word relates to the idea of a bay or a gulf. Some people think the name "north" relates to lowlands. This is because the word "bottom" can mean low ground.

The gulf is a very large and deep place. It has a surface area of about 390,000 square kilometers. The average depth is 55 meters, but it can reach 450 meters. One amazing thing is that the land is rising. Huge ice sheets from the last ice age pressed the land down. Now, the land rises by 80 centimeters every hundred years.

In 2,000 years, the north might become a fresh lake.

Life around the gulf is busy and works with nature. The land is covered in heavy forests. People log these trees and move them to the coast. The gulf is also used to move oil and iron ore. Many large ports serve the area, like Luleå in Sweden and Oulu in Finland.

Because it is so cold, the water freezes for five months each year. Ships often need icebreakers to help them travel through the ice.
