It acts like a wall that separates the Curonian Lagoon from the Baltic Sea. This special place is shared by two countries, Lithuania and Russia. The northern part sits in Lithuania, while the southern part is in Russia. It is so important that it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

A single road runs along its entire length. You can even take a ferry to reach the spit from the city of Klaipėda.

This land was shaped by nature a very long time ago.

It began forming around the 3rd millennium BC. A glacial moraine, which is a pile of rocks and soil from a glacier, served as its base. Later, winds and sea currents brought enough sand to build the dunes. The spit is always changing because of how sand moves. Eventually, the shallow bay inside the spit might fill with sand to create new land.

History has brought many different people to this sandy shore.

Long ago, a major trading center called Kaup was located here. Later, the Teutonic Knights built castles in the area. In the 1800s, the Kursenieki people lived on the spit. Sadly, many villages were once buried by moving sand dunes. This happened because people cut down too many trees for wood and boats. To fix this, the government began planting new forests in 1825.

The spit is a very busy place for nature and art.

It is home to the highest moving sand dunes in Europe. Many birds use the spit as a path when they fly long distances. Between 10 and 20 million birds fly over the area every year. In the late 1800s, many painters came to capture the beautiful landscape.
