There are about 1,969 islets in the whole bay. Most of these islands are made of limestone. The core area of the bay is very crowded with 775 islets. Some islands are very tall and rise high from the sea. Others have thick green jungles growing on top of them. Many islands even have huge caves inside, like the large Hang Dau Go cave.

This landscape took a very long time to form. The limestone itself formed over 500 million years. The shapes of the islands changed over the last 20 million years. This happened because of the tropical wet climate.

The area is very diverse for living things. It has a tropical evergreen system and a seashore system. There are 14 types of flowers and 60 types of animals found only here. You might see monkeys, lizards, or many different birds on the islands.

People have lived in this area for a very long time. Research shows prehistoric humans lived here tens of thousands of years ago. Different ancient cultures, like the Soi Nhụ and Cái Bèo, lived in the bay.

Long ago, the bay was a place for important naval battles. In 1288, General Trần Hưng Đạo used wooden stakes to stop Mongol ships. In 1994, UNESCO named the core zone a World Heritage Site. This was done because the bay shows important parts of Earth's history.

Today, about 1,540 people live in the bay. Many of them live in four fishing villages like Cua Van.

These people live in houses that float on the water. They use rafts made of tires and plastic jugs to stay afloat. They make a living by fishing and growing seafood in the water. They catch 200 types of fish and 450 kinds of mollusks. Now, many residents also work in tourism by offering boat tours and seafood meals to visitors.
