This place has a very long history. Long ago, it was part of East Prussia. Many different groups lived on this land. Old Prussians, Germans, Poles, and Lithuanians all lived here. In the 13th century, a group called the Teutonic Order took control. They built the city of Königsberg. This was the old name for Kaliningrad.

Things changed after World War II. The Soviet Union took the land. Many German people left or were sent away. New people moved in to live there. Most of these people were Soviet citizens. Today, about one million people live in this region.

Over time, the culture and language of the region changed many times.

Many important things happened in the city of Königsberg during the early modern period. It was the capital of the Duchy of Prussia for a long time. The city was a center for learning and books. It was the place where the first Lithuanian grammar book was published.

The Albertina University was also located here. It was the second oldest university in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

Even though the rulers changed, the city remained a very important place for printing and education.

Large changes came during the 20th century through two world wars. During World War I, Russian troops fought in the region. They won a victory at the Battle of Gumbinnen.

Later, during World War II, the area saw much fighting. In 1945, Soviet troops reached the borders of East Prussia. After the war, the Soviet Union annexed the territory to the Russian SFSR.

This meant the land moved from being part of Germany to being part of the Soviet Union.

Today, the region looks very different than it did hundreds of years ago. After the war, many German people left the area. They were replaced by Soviet citizens, most of whom were Russians.

In the 2021 census, about one million people lived in the oblast. You can still see traces of the past in the buildings and streets.

The history of this land is a complex sequence of conquests and migrations. Originally, the Old Prussians and other Western Balts inhabited the area. In the 13th century, the Teutonic Order conquered the region. They established the State of the Teutonic Order, which was a theocracy. A theocracy is a system where religious leaders hold political power. In 1255, they founded the city of Königsberg. They built it on the site of a destroyed Sambian settlement.

Political control of the territory shifted many times through the centuries. In 1454, the Prussian Confederation requested to join the Kingdom of Poland. This led to the Thirteen Years' War. After Poland won, the Teutonic State became a vassal of Poland. This means they were under the protection and authority of the Polish King. In 1525, the region became the Duchy of Prussia. This was the first Protestant state in Europe. Königsberg served as the capital of this Duchy until 1660.

Königsberg became a major center for European culture and education. It was the home of the Albertina University. This was the second oldest university in the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. The city also became a vital hub for printing. It saw the publication of the first Lithuanian grammar book. It also hosted the first Polish translation of the New Testament.

The 19th and 20th centuries brought massive demographic and political changes. In 1824, the population of East Prussia was about 1,080,000 people. Germans made up slightly more than half of this group. About 26% were ethnically Polish and 19% were ethnically Lithuanian.

During World War I, the region was a major battleground. Russian troops achieved a victory at the Battle of Gumbinnen. Later, World War II caused extreme destruction. Soviet troops reached the borders of East Prussia in August 1944. By January 1945, they had captured almost the entire region.

Following the defeat of Nazi Germany, the territory underwent a total transformation. The Soviet Union annexed the land to the Russian SFSR. This caused a massive shift in who lived there. There was a large-scale migration and expulsion of the German population. They were replaced by Soviet citizens, most of whom were Russians.

Today, the oblast connects its Prussian past with its modern Russian identity. It remains a strategically important maritime and political zone in the Baltic region.
