In 1255, the Teutonic Knights built a fortress there. They called it Conigsberg, which means "King's mountain." They named it to honor King Ottokar II of Bohemia.

The city grew into three different towns. These were called Altstadt, Löbenicht, and Kneiphof. Kneiphof sat on an island in the Pregolya River. Over time, these towns joined together to make one big city. People came to live there to work as weavers, brewers, and armorers.

Many different groups of people called this city home. At first, Germans and Old Prussians lived there together. Later, Poles, Lithuanians, and French people moved to the area too.

It was also a place where kings were crowned. From 1701, it served as the coronation city for the Prussian monarchy. Even though the capital was in Berlin, the kings still came to Königsberg for special ceremonies.

War changed the city forever in the 1940s. During World War II, the city was hit by heavy bombing.
