The city was a vital Baltic port. It served as a center for trade and intellectual life for many centuries.

The city grew from a simple village of fishermen and hunters.

In 1255, the Teutonic Knights arrived during the Baltic Crusades. They destroyed a Prussian settlement called Twangste. They replaced it with a new stone fortress. They named it Conigsberg to honor King Ottokar II of Bohemia. This name literally means "King's mountain."

The fortress helped the Knights control the region.

Königsberg eventually grew into three distinct towns. The first was Altstadt, or Old Town. It received town rights in 1286. The second was Löbenicht, which gained rights in 1300. The third was Kneiphof, located on an island in the Pregolya River.

Kneiphof received its rights in 1327. These three areas eventually merged into one large urban center. Early residents included weavers, brewers, and armorers.

The city's history involved many changing rulers. In 1454, the city joined a rebellion against the Teutonic Knights. The members of the Prussian Confederation asked the Polish king to take control. This led to the Thirteen Years' War.

After the war, the city became a fief of the Kingdom of Poland. Later, it became the capital of the Duchy of Prussia. From 1701, it served as the coronation city for the Prussian monarchy.

Königsberg was a massive center for culture and printing. It was home to the Albertina University, founded in 1544.

These included the philosopher Immanuel Kant and the mathematician David Hilbert. The city was a hub for Lutheran literature.

World War II brought massive destruction to the city. Allied bombing heavily damaged the urban areas in 1944.

In early 1945, the Red Army fought the Battle of Königsberg. The Soviet Union annexed the territory on 9 April 1945. The Potsdam Agreement placed the area under Soviet administration. The German population was expelled. Most new residents came from Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus.

In 1946, the Soviet government renamed the city Kaliningrad. This name honored the Soviet leader Mikhail Kalinin. The government also demolished much of the historic center.
