Nationally, it ranks as the fourth largest port in Germany. It follows the North Sea ports of Hamburg, Bremen/Bremerhaven, and Wilhelmshaven. The port facilitates heavy maritime traffic. Ferry routes connect Rostock to Gedser in Denmark and Trelleborg in Sweden. These routes are among the busiest links between Germany and Scandinavia.

After the Danish king Valdemar I burned the town in 1161, German traders settled there. The city originally consisted of three separate areas. These were the Altstadt, the Mittelstadt, and the Neustadt. In 1218, the prince of Mecklenburg granted the city Lübeck law city rights.

In 1251, Rostock joined the Hanseatic League. This was a powerful network of merchant guilds and market towns. By the 14th century, Rostock was a dominant seaport with 12,000 inhabitants. It was the largest city in Mecklenburg at that time. The city even built its own ships for cruising the Baltic Sea. To protect its maritime access, Rostock incorporated the fishing village of Warnemünde in 1323. However, the city later faced political struggles. Conflicts with the dukes of Mecklenburg led to a loss of economic and political power.

Education is a cornerstone of the city's identity. The University of Rostock was founded in 1419. It is the oldest university in the Baltic region. It also ranks among the oldest universities in the world.
