Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is a federal state located in the north-east of Germany.

It is named after two historic regions: Mecklenburg and Western Pomerania, known in German as Vorpommern. The name Vorpommern has West Slavic origins. The prefix "po-" means along or at, and the base "more" means sea. Therefore, the name essentially means "Land at the Sea." The German prefix "vor-" indicates a closer location, meaning this is the part of Pomerania nearer to the west. Today, the state is a major part of the German landscape. It serves as a significant center for tourism, science, and maritime activity.

Geographically, the state occupies a large area of 23,770 square kilometers. This makes it the sixth largest state in Germany by land size. However, it ranks 14th in total population and 16th in population density.

This low density means the state has much open space. It is bounded by the Baltic Sea to the north. To the west lies Schleswig-Holstein. To the southwest is Lower Saxony. To the south is Brandenburg, and to the east is the West Pomeranian Voivodeship in Poland. The state contains diverse landscapes, from the Mecklenburg Lake District to various coastal islands.

The history of human settlement in this region began after the Ice Age, around 10,000 BC.

Germanic peoples lived in the area about two thousand years ago. During the Migration Period, many of these people moved toward Spain, Italy, and France. In the sixth century, Polabian Slavs populated the area. Mecklenburg was settled by the Obotrites, while Pomerania was settled by the Veleti and the Rani. Along the coast, groups like the Vikings and Slavs established important trade posts. These early settlements helped shape the cultural roots of the region.

Political structures changed many times through the Middle Ages. In the 12th century, Henry the Lion conquered the Obotrites and Christianized the local people. This led to the arrival of German monks, nobles, and traders. Mecklenburg became a duchy of the Holy Roman Empire in 1348. It remained relatively independent for a long time. Meanwhile, Western Pomerania was ruled by Pomeranian dukes. After the Peace of Westphalia in 1648, it was under Swedish rule. Later, in 1815, it became a province of Prussia. These shifting borders defined the identity of the two regions.

The modern state was formed through several political shifts in the 20th century. In May 1945, Soviet and Western armies met east of Schwerin. Following the Potsdam Agreement, the Soviet military administration established the Province of Mecklenburg and West Pomerania on July 9, 1945.

This state became part of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) in 1949. However, in 1952, the GDR dissolved the state during administrative reforms. The territory was split into three districts: Rostock, Schwerin, and Neubrandenburg. Following German reunification in 1990, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern was re-established as a new state of the Federal Republic of Germany.

The state also hosts important international gatherings. In 2007, the 33rd G8 summit was held at the Grand Hotel Heiligendamm. This took place during the chancellorship of Angela Merkel. The state continues to grow, with positive net migration recorded since 2013. It remains a place where historic architecture meets modern economic growth.
