Lower Saxony is a major state located in northern Germany.

It is the second-largest state in Germany by land area. In terms of population, it is the fourth-largest of the 16 German states. As of 2021, approximately 8 million people lived in the region. Lower Saxony is unique because it borders more neighbors than any other single German state. It touches the North Sea to the north and the Netherlands to the west. It also shares borders with several other German states, including Schleswig-Holstein, Hamburg, Brandenburg, Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia, Hesse, North Rhine-Westphalia, and Bremen.

The geography of the state is incredibly diverse. The northern half of the state belongs to the North German Plain. This region is almost always flat, though there are gentle hills near the Bremen geestland. In the northwest, the coastline of the North Sea includes the East Frisian Islands.

Moving toward the south and southwest, the landscape changes into the Central Uplands. This area includes the Weser Uplands and the Harz Mountains. The Harz Mountains are located in the southeast. The highest point in the entire state is the Wurmberg, located in the Harz. In the northeast, you will find the Lüneburg Heath. This is the largest heathland area in Germany.

Water plays a vital role in the state's landscape and climate. Several large rivers flow north through the region. These include the Ems, the Weser, the Aller, and the Elbe. The Elbe river valley serves as a boundary between Lower Saxony and places like Hamburg and Brandenburg. The state's climate sits in a transition zone. It is between the maritime climate of Western Europe and the continental climate of Eastern Europe. The northwest has an Atlantic climate with steady temperatures and plenty of water. However, the southeast has a more continental climate. This means the southeast experiences larger temperature changes between summer and winter. The Harz Mountains receive the highest levels of precipitation due to orographic rain. This happens when windward mountains force air upward.

Soil types across the state determine how the land is used. The Lüneburg Heath is dominated by poor, sandy soils known as geest. In contrast, the central-east and southeast contain a loess börde zone. This zone has highly fertile soil. Because of this fertility, the land is well-developed for agriculture. One specific area, the Altes Land, is located on the left banks of the Elbe. This region has a gentle climate and fertile soil. It is the largest area for fruit farming in the state. Most of the produce grown there consists of apples. In the extreme west, the Emsland region was once dominated by inaccessible swamps. Today, it is an economically emerging area, though it remains sparsely populated.

The modern state of Lower Saxony was formed through a specific political process. It was officially created on November 1, 1946. This happened through the merger of the State of Hanover with three smaller free states. These states were Braunschweig, Oldenburg, and Schaumburg-Lippe. The creation of the state was done with British approval. Most of the new territory came from the historic Kingdom of Hanover. Because of this connection, Lower Saxony uses the coat of arms and symbols of the former kingdom.

The name "Saxony" itself comes from the ancient Germanic tribe known as the Saxons. These people occupied this settlement area starting around the 7th century.

Urban life is concentrated in several major cities and metropolitan regions. Hanover is the state capital and its largest city. Other significant cities include Braunschweig, Oldenburg, Osnabrück, and Wolfsburg. Other large towns include Göttingen, Salzgitter, Hildesheim, and Delmenhorst. Many of these urban centers are located in the central and southern parts of the state. The cities of Hanover, Braunschweig, Göttingen, and Wolfsburg form a major metropolitan region. This area serves as a core for the state's economy and infrastructure. The state is administratively divided into 37 districts, known as Landkreise. There are also eight urban districts and two cities with special status.

Lower Saxony is also a place of significant natural preservation. Nearly 20% of the land is designated as nature parks. These parks include the Harz, the Lüneburger Heide, and the Weser Uplands. These protected areas help preserve the diverse ecosystems found in the state. From the coastal islands to the mountain peaks, the state connects maritime environments with mountainous ones. This variety makes the region a significant part of the German landscape. The state continues to be a major center for agriculture, industry, and tourism.
