Krasnodar is a major urban center located in southern Russia. It serves as the administrative capital of Krasnodar Krai. The city sits on the right bank of the Kuban River. It is approximately 1,300 km south of Moscow. The Black Sea is located 120 km to the west.

As of recent years, it is the largest city in the Southern Federal District. It is also the tenth-largest city in Russia. The city has a population of 1,154,885 residents. The Urban Okrug contains up to 1.263 million people.

The climate in Krasnodar is classified as humid subtropical. This is known as the Cfa climate type. It is very similar to the climate found in New York City. Summers are typically hot. In July, the average temperature is 23°C. Winters are often cold and damp. Snow cover can be unstable during these months. Temperatures can drop below -10°C quite often. This happens because no mountains protect the city from cold waves. Precipitation is spread fairly evenly throughout the entire year. Extreme storms are a rare occurrence in this region.

Krasnodar has a long and complex history that began in 1793. It started as a military camp and a fortress. The Black Sea Cossacks built it to defend imperial borders. They also wanted to assert Russian dominion over Circassia. At that time, Ottoman Turkey contested these claims.

The city was originally named Yekaterinodar. This name means "Catherine's Gift." It honored Catherine the Great and Saint Catherine of Alexandria. The city gained official town status in 1867. By 1888, the population reached about 45,000 people. It had become a vital trade center for the south.

Significant political changes altered the city during the 20th century. During the Russian Civil War, the city changed hands several times. It fell under the control of both the Red Army and the Volunteer Army. On December 7, 1920, the name changed to Krasnodar. This name means "Gift of the Reds." The prefix "Krasno-" can mean red or beautiful. The city also faced the Soviet famine of 1932–1933. During this time, Krasnodar lost over 14% of its population. These events shaped the modern identity of the region.

The city suffered greatly during World War II. German forces occupied Krasnodar from August 9, 1942, to February 12, 1943. This was part of Operation Edelweiss. The fighting caused heavy damage to the city. During the occupation, thousands of Jews, Communists, and partisans were killed.

After the war, the city was rebuilt and renovated. In the summer of 1943, the Soviets held trials for war crimes. The first tribunal took place from July 14 to 17, 1943. Eight death sentences were carried out in the city square. Later, in 1971, a bus bombing killed 10 people.

Today, Krasnodar is a massive economic hub. It has the largest annual turnover in the Southern Federal District. In 2010, retail trade turnover reached 290 billion rubles. The industrial sector includes more than 130 large and medium enterprises. Agriculture and the food industry make up 42.8% of this sector. The energy sector accounts for 13.4%. Fuel industry makes up 10.5%. Machine construction is 9.4%. The city also has a very low unemployment rate of 0.3%.
