Fangchenggang

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Fangchenggang is a prefecture-level city located in southern China. It sits within the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. The city is a coastal area positioned along the Tonkin Gulf. It serves as a vital gateway because it is the southernmost port in China. The name itself reveals its primary function. The word "gang" in Fangchenggang means port. This makes the city the "Port of Fangcheng." It is one of only two major Chinese ports on the Tonkin Gulf. The other major port in this region is Beihai.

The city functions as a massive hub for maritime trade. It primarily services large vessels known as bulk carriers. These ships carry massive amounts of cargo across the ocean. To support this growing industry, the region has engaged in land reclamation. This is a process where new land is created from the sea. As of December 2018, large amounts of land reclamation were in progress. This work helps build new and additional ports for even more ships. The city also relies on advanced transportation networks to move goods and people.

Fangchenggang is connected to other major cities by rail. It receives service from Qinzhou East and Nanning. Since the end of 2013, the Fangchenggang North Railway Station has offered high-speed service. These are known as D-series trains. They provide fast travel to Nanning. As of March 2019, there were nine D-type trains running daily to Nanning. There were also two T-type trains running daily to Qinzhou. This rail network makes the city a highly accessible part of the region.

The history of the city includes periods of unique administrative status. From December 25, 1978, until May 23, 1993, it had a different name. It was known as the "Fangcheng Pan-Ethnicities Autonomous County." This name reflected the diverse groups of people living there. Today, the city is much larger in scale. The resident population is expected to reach 1,079,800 by the year 2024. The city is divided into several administrative parts. These include two urban districts, Gangkou and Fangcheng. It also contains the Dongxing county-level city and Shangsi County. There are also 17 townships, six towns, 283 villages, and seven subdistricts.

The population of Fangchenggang is very diverse. In terms of ethnicity, the Han group makes up 54.36% of the people. This equals 390,286 individuals. The Zhuang group is the next largest at 40%, or 287,207 people. The Yao group accounts for 3.73%, which is 26,749 people. The Jing group makes up 1.71%, or 12,288 people. Other minority groups combined make up 0.02%. Because of this variety, the city is linguistically diverse. People speak Qin-Lian Yue, Hakka, Zhuang, Yao, and Vietnamese. The most dominant language used is Yue.

The natural environment of Fangchenggang is rich with life. The landscape features forested mountains and valleys filled with streams. The forests are home to more than 500 types of plants. This includes over 4,000 types of medicinal plants and herbs. The area supports 25 species of mammals. Many insects, reptiles, amphibians, and birds also live here. You can find nationally protected animals like gibbons, frogs, butterflies, and tortoises. In the ocean, people can see whales, dolphins, and dugongs. A very rare plant called Camellia nitidissima grows near the border with Vietnam. This plant is the city flower. Its blossoms are dried and sold as a local specialty tea.

Local culture and industry are closely tied to the land. Agriculture is a major part of the economy. Farmers grow rice, corn, peanuts, oranges, and sugarcane. The region also provides natural resources like coal, limestone, and spring water. Other economic drivers include commercial fishing, hydropower, and food production. Tourism is also significant, especially in the undeveloped areas near the Vietnam border. Culture is expressed through traditional arts like tea-picking opera. This is the most popular traditional Chinese opera in the city. Actors often perform this during large celebrations and special events. They frequently use the Fangcheng Yue dialect in their performances.
