The city is located between the major urban centers of Tianjin and Beijing. It is a diverse region that combines heavy industry with large agricultural areas. The city's administrative territory is quite large and complex. It includes two districts, four county-level cities, nine counties, and one autonomous county. This mix of urban and rural land allows for many different types of economic activity.

The geography of Cangzhou is shaped by both water and land. The Grand Canal, a famous historic waterway, passes directly through the city. One specific area, the Yunhe District, takes its name from this canal.

To the north, the city borders the city of Langfang. To the west, it meets Baoding, and to the southwest, it borders Hengshui. The city is well-connected by major transportation routes. It sits on the Beijing–Shanghai Railway. It also connects to the provincial capital, Shijiazhuang, via the G1811 Huanghua–Shijiazhuang Expressway. The Huanghua Harbour serves as a vital end point for the Shuohuang Railway, which ships coal.

Cangzhou's climate follows a monsoon-influenced pattern. It is described as having a humid continental or semi-arid climate. This means the city experiences four distinct seasons. The winters are typically cold and dry. In contrast, the summers are hot and humid. Most of the annual precipitation occurs during the months of July and August. Despite the summer rain, the city is quite bright. It receives 2,663 hours of bright sunshine every year. The amount of monthly sunshine can range from 49% in July to 65% in October.

The history of Cangzhou stretches back many centuries. It is said to have been founded during the 5th and 6th centuries. This was during the Southern and Northern Dynasties era of Chinese history. The city's name comes from the former imperial Cang Prefecture. During the late Tang and the following Five Dynasties era, it was part of Yiwu Province. One of the city's most famous historical treasures is the Iron Lion of Cangzhou.

This massive sculpture was cast in the year 953 during the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period. It weighs approximately 40 tons. It is reported to be the largest cast-iron sculpture in the world.

Today, the economy of Cangzhou is driven by several major sectors. The urban center is heavily industrial and hosts international companies from Japan and Germany. The North China Oil Field falls under the city's jurisdiction. The Huanghua Harbour is a major site for exporting coal. At the same time, the region is a significant producer of food. It is well known for growing Chinese jujubes, apples, and pears. The pears are often exported under the name Tianjin Ya Pear. This balance of oil, shipping, and farming defines the local economy.

The population of Cangzhou is large and diverse. According to the 2020 census, the total population of the prefecture-level unit was 7,300,783. The built-up metro area, including Yunhe, Xinhua, and Cang County, had 1,421,843 inhabitants. Most residents are Han Chinese, but there is also a sizable Muslim Hui minority. The city is home to seven mosques. The West Mosque is notable for its museum. This museum holds one of China's best collections of Islamic manuscripts and artifacts. Most people in the area speak a variety of the Ji Lu Mandarin dialect known as Cangzhou.

Cangzhou also has a rich cultural identity through performing arts. The city is historically famous for wushu, or Chinese martial arts. It is also known for the Wu Qiao school of acrobatics. The Iron Lion remains a powerful symbol of the city's heritage. It is even used as the name for a local beer. Education and sports also play a role in community life. Cangzhou Normal University is a major local institution. The city also hosts a professional football team, the Cangzhou Mighty Lions, which plays at the Cangzhou Stadium.
