A massive hydroelectric dam is located upstream from the city. This dam regulates the water flow significantly. Because of this regulation, the Yenisey does not freeze during the winter. It also prevents the river from flooding the city in summer. Large islands like Tatyshev and Otdyha sit within the river.

The city's history began as a frontier fortification.

On August 19, 1628, Andrey Dubenskiy led a group to the confluence of the Kacha and Yenisei Rivers. They built a fort to protect the frontier from native peoples. The name Krasnoyarsk likely comes from the Yarin word Kyzyl Char. This term translates to "red steep-riverbank." The settlement officially gained town status in 1690. Growth accelerated after the Siberian Route road arrived between 1735 and 1741.

In 1749, a meteorite was discovered south of the city. This was the first pallasite meteorite ever studied by scientists. It was later excavated by Peter Simon Pallas in 1772. During the Russian Civil War, the city saw shifting control between white forces and Bolsheviks. In the 20th century, the city became a center for the Soviet gulag system. Important labor camps included Kraslag and Yeniseylag. During World War II, many factories were evacuated here from Ukraine and Western Russia.

Industrialization transformed the city's economic landscape.

During the era of Five Year Plans, many large plants were built. These included a paper factory and a major hydroelectric power station. The dam is now the fifth largest in the world. The city also hosts a major aluminum plant and a metallurgic plant. Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the economy underwent a difficult transition. This period involved privatization and changes in ownership for many large factories. Since 1996, urban restoration has improved the appearance of the city's historical buildings.

The surrounding landscape is diverse and rugged.

To the south and west, forested mountains surround the city. Notable peaks include Nikolayevskaya Sopka and Chornaya Sopka, an extinct volcano. The Stolby Nature Sanctuary is located 10 km south of the city. This reserve is famous for its massive rock cliffs. The local forests consist of pine, birch, and aspen trees. In higher mountains, moss-covered fir and Siberian pine become dominant. The climate is a humid continental type with high temperature differences between seasons.

Krasnoyarsk remains a significant cultural and educational hub.

The Siberian Federal University is a major institution located here. The city also hosted the 2019 Winter Universiade games.

This was the third time Russia hosted this event. The city's ethnic makeup is primarily Russian. However, there are also significant communities of Tajiks, Kyrgyz, and Chinese residents. This diversity contributes to the modern character of the Siberian landscape.
