It is one of the largest cities in the Siberian region. The city holds the rank of the 25th-largest city in Russia by population. It is also the fifth-largest city in the Siberian Federal District. Irkutsk sits in a landscape of rolling hills and thick taiga forests. This forest type is very common in Eastern Siberia. The city is a vital hub for transportation and industry.

The city is built around the Angara River. This river is a tributary of the Yenisei River. The Angara flows from Lake Baikal and passes the city.

A smaller river called the Irkut River joins the Angara directly opposite the city. The Irkut River is also the source of the city's name. The name comes from the Buryat word for "spinning." The city is divided into the "left bank" and the "right bank" based on the Angara's flow. The Irkutsk Hydroelectric Dam crosses the wide river downstream.

Irkutsk grew from a small defensive outpost into a major trade center. In 1652, Ivan Pokhabov built winter quarters for gold trading. These quarters were used to collect fur taxes from the Buryats. In 1661, Yakov Pokhabov built an ostrog, which is a small fort.

The settlement gained official town rights in 1686. Early Irkutsk was divided into a "small town" and a "big city." The small town was a wooden fortress near the river. The big city, or posad, was where commercial life happened. It was inhabited by people from northern Russia who brought their own customs.

In the early 19th century, the city's culture changed significantly. Many Russian nobles and artists were sent to Irkutsk in exile. They were part of the Decembrist revolt of 1825. By the end of the 19th century, one out of every two men in the city was an exile. These intellectuals helped turn Irkutsk into a center for social and cultural life. They built wooden houses with ornate, hand-carved decorations.

Because of this beauty, the city earned nicknames like "The Paris of Siberia" and "Siberian Athens."

Irkutsk has faced many challenges throughout its history. A massive fire in 1789 destroyed three-quarters of the city. This fire ruined about 4,000 houses and many public buildings. The city recovered quickly and installed electricity by 1896. The first train arrived at the station in 1898.

During the Russian Civil War from 1918 to 1920, the city saw bitter fighting. The city was a site of clashes between the "White movement" and the "Bolsheviks." In 1920, the commander Aleksandr Kolchak was executed in the city.

In the 20th century, the city underwent major industrial changes. During the Soviet period, the architecture was dominated by a squared-up style. The city became a major center for aircraft manufacture. Between 1950 and 1959, the large Irkutsk Reservoir was built on the Angara River. This was done to generate hydroelectric power and help industry grow. Today, the city remains an important industrial and administrative location.

The historic center of Irkutsk is very special. It is included on UNESCO's tentative list of World Heritage Sites. You can still see very old stone buildings there. The Epiphany Cathedral was built between 1718 and 1746.

The city's layout still reflects its past. The streets in the old center follow the curves of the ancient river coastline. This shows how the city grew spontaneously over many centuries.
