Irkutsk Oblast is a federal subject of Russia located in southeastern Siberia. It is a vast region defined by major river basins. The Angara, Lena, and Nizhnyaya Tunguska rivers all flow through this territory. The administrative center for the region is the city of Irkutsk. According to the 2021 Census, the oblast has a population of 2,370,102 people. The region is bordered by several other Russian territories and nations. It sits near the Republic of Buryatia and the Tuva Republic to the south and southwest. These republics separate the oblast from Mongolia to the south. Other neighbors include Krasnoyarsk Krai to the west, the Sakha Republic to the northeast, and Zabaykalsky Krai to the east.

The geography of the region is dominated by diverse landforms and massive water systems. Much of the land consists of the hills and broad valleys of the Central Siberian Plateau. The Lena-Angara Plateau is another major feature of the landscape. Along the edges of Lake Baikal, you will find the Primorsky Range and the Baikal Mountains. In the northeast, the terrain rises into the North Baikal Highlands and the Patom Plateau. The highest point in the entire oblast is called Pik Tofalariya. Lake Baikal sits in the southeast of the region. It is the oldest and deepest lake in the world. This lake contains more than one-fifth of the Earth's fresh liquid surface water. The Angara River drains the lake and flows north across the province. To manage this water, the Irkutsk Dam controls the outflow rate. Other large dams exist at Bratsk and Ust-Ilimsk, which create large reservoirs on the Angara.

The history of the region involves many different cultures and empires. Long ago, Mongolic-related Slab Grave cultural monuments existed in the Baikal territory. The area was controlled by several groups, including the Xiongnu Empire and the Mongol Empire. Medieval tribes like the Merkit and Bayad Mongols also inhabited the region. Russian presence began to grow in the 17th century. This followed the conquest of the Khanate of Sibir in 1582. By the late 1600s, Irkutsk had become a small town with monasteries and agricultural settlements. During the 18th century, the region became a vital center for trade and crafts. Gold- and silver-smiths began to work in the area. Irkutsk grew into a major transportation hub for Eastern Siberia. It connected routes from the Pacific regions to Mongolia and China. In 1764, it became the center of the independent Irkutsk Governorate.

In the 18th century, Irkutsk also played a role in global exploration. The city helped organize Vitus Bering's first and second expeditions to Kamchatka. Merchant companies in Irkutsk even explored the Aleutian Islands and Alaska. In 1799, these companies formed the Russian-American Company. This group managed trades in the North-Eastern sea and the Aleutian and Kuril islands. The seafarer Grigorii Ivanovich Shelikhov was a key figure in controlling the northern Pacific. This era also saw the growth of education and culture. The first school in Eastern Siberia opened in 1725. By the 1780s, the region had a public library, a museum, and an amateur theater. The city landscape changed as stone buildings like the Triumph gate were constructed.

The 19th century brought even more development and some great challenges. Irkutsk became a major center for gold manufacturing starting in the 1830s. Merchants explored gold regions in the Yenisey and Lena rivers. This wealth funded the construction of hospitals, schools, and private residences. In 1898, the arrival of the Trans-Siberian Railway transformed the region. This railway helped the city develop much faster. However, the city suffered a massive fire in July 1879. This disaster destroyed more than two-thirds of the city buildings and 75 districts. The city eventually rebuilt itself with new stone and wooden structures. The 19th century also saw the rise of scientific research. The Siberian branch of the Russian Geographical Society opened in 1851. Geologists worked extensively to explore the Lena River and Lake Baikal.

In the 20th century, the region underwent significant industrial and social changes. The Russian Revolution and the Civil War impacted the area. Starting in the 1930s, the city began large-scale industrial construction. This included plants for mechanical engineering, food, and textiles. Education continued to expand with the founding of Irkutsk State University in 1918. Other specialized institutes for medicine and agriculture followed. The city also modernized its infrastructure. Streetcar routes opened in 1947, and trolleybus routes arrived in 1972. Today, the region remains a center for science, industry, and sports.
